Observe - Lake Pflugerville or Local Water Source, Water Plant, and Treatment Process
Girl Scouts continually seek opportunities for expanding their knowledge and skills, and in this program will learn simple behaviors their families can adopt to conserve water. Observe yourself and family members over one or two days to see what water-saving activities you already perform and identify some ways water is wasted in your home. (Complete Level 1 assignment below)
Connect - What have you seen in the past & how it effects your future
Girls will begin to understand how great a problem seemingly small water-wasting activities can be when discussing and comparing answers with other Girl Scouts the activities observed in Level 1. When a lot of people make the same mistakes, gallons add up! Use your skills and knowledge to work with others to educate the community about the need to protect the nation’s valuable water resources. (Complete Level 2 assignment below)
Take Action - How will you get this message out to your community, family, and friends?
Girls should be able to identify some community water conservation needs. The first step in fixing the problem is understanding the problem. Now girls can take action by actively doing their part to help their community see and understand how little changes in conserving water can add up to make a big difference.
THE REQUIREMENTS ARE DIVIDED INTO DAISY/BROWNIE, JUNIOR/CADETTE AND CADETTE/SENIOR GIRL SCOUT LEVELS
LEVEL 1 - DAISY AND BROWNIES complete all four activities listed.
- Describe what it means to conserve water.
- Read a brochure on how to conserve water with your leader or on your own, and discuss it with your group.
- Be able to name at least 5 ways to conserve water in and around your home.
- Complete the activities in the “Save our Pfuture” activity book available on the City’s website.
- Be creative and draw a picture of a new way you can save water.
Level 2 - JUNIORS AND CADETTES choose four activities after completing Level 1.
- Draw a poster of yourself doing something to conserve water. You’ve probably heard of campaigns such as “Click it or ticket” or “Don’t mess with Texas.” Today is your chance to make up a poster with your own creative slogan to encourage water conservation. Present these to your troop.
- Write your own pledge to conserve water and say it before your group.
- Illustrate your own drawing of the Water Cycle.
- Identify your local water source and what water supplier serves your neighborhood.
- Look around the house and document an area where you think you might be able to do a better job of saving water. Take action to improve the situation.
Level 3 - SENIORS AND AMBASSADORS complete the four activities below after completing Level 1 & 2.
- Learn about your local water supply system. What lake, aquifer or stream is used to provide the water that ends up in your home faucet?
- Design an experiment that will demonstrate some part of the water cycle. Suggestions- Make a rain gauge to measure rainfall amounts or invent some way to demonstrate one of the concepts that you have learned while working on this program.
- Learn about some of the plans your local water district has to help ensure we have water for the future. (Consider a tour of your local water/wastewater plant or call your city public works department!)
- Discuss with your family what you have learned about water as you have worked on this patch. Ask them to keep track of their water use habits for a week and then decide together if there are any permanent changes they can make to help save water. Look at your family water bill and see how much water your family is using each month. What months do you use the most water? Why do you think some months are higher than others? What could you do during those months to lower the bill?
