Grass clippings belong on your lawn; not in the storm drain

Post Date:10/25/2017 9:00 a.m.

LawnMower2When you mow your lawn, what do you do with the grass clippings? It is best to leave the clippings directly on your lawn so they act as a fertilizer to the soil. Bagging the grass is an option as bagged grass is picked up by the trash pickup service. When using a blower to get the grass clippings off of your driveway or sidewalk, blow the grass clippings back onto your lawn for the added fertilizing benefits. Do not blow the grass out into the street or into the storm drain as this can cause them to clog and cause major issues in a rain event and lead to flooding. Taking the lawn mower bag and emptying it out in the street is especially harmful. The grasses may contain fertilizer or other run off and it will transport down the storm drain into our creeks and waterways. Please don’t blow your grass into the street; be stormwater aware.
